Tigers in a Familiar Situation

CHS reaches third round sixth straight season
COMMERCE - With just five days until hosting No. 1 ranked Washington in the Class A third round playoffs, Commerce Tigers head coach Rick Trimble is very familiar with this situation.
Trimble has guided the 9th ranked Tigers to a 9-2 season record. Commerce advanced to the third round of the playoffs for the sixth straight year and the eighth out of the last nine seasons following a come-from-behind 26-17 victory over Hominy Saturday night at Tiger Field.
“We'd give anything to win the third round,” Trimble said. “The difference this year is that we haven't been the home team since 1998 and we would like to reward our loyal fans with a victory.”
Following a 40-0 shutout over Apache Friday night, the Washington Warriors come to Commerce with a perfect 12-0 record.
“Washington is a very good football team,” Trimble said. “Not only do they have a talented quarterback, but they have a tremendous running back.
“That, and the fact that we're playing great defense right now should make for a very entertaining game,” Trimble said. “Our biggest concern is that we don't want to shoot ourselves in the foot. We want to rise up another notch next week and play at the next level.”
Trimble and his coaching staff of Steve Moss, Jack Kelley and Willie Ng must work around the Thanksgiving holiday.
“That really hasn't been a problem for us in the past,” Trimble said. “We have parents and families that are going to support us and the kids will get to have Thanksgiving with their loved ones. We'll adjust our practice schedule to either early or late, so they can have family time.
“But, once you get to this level, you've got to prepare. Even more so when you're facing an undefeated team.
“I'm blessed as a head coach with great assistant coaches,” Trimble said. “And as a coaching staff, we are equally as blessed with great kids.”
Although the Tigers allowed Hominy to build a 10-0 lead on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Dillon Owens to Chase Fairweather and a 27-yard field goal by Owens, Commerce needed less than three minutes in the second quarter to grab the lead.
After a 39-yard kickoff return by Jordan Beckwith, the Tigers scored with 2:20 left until half on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Walker to Jimmy Brock.
Beckwith's extra point sailed wide right as the Tigers trailed by a 10-6 score.
Beckwith returned an Owens' pass 43 yards to give Commerce another scoring chance at the Hominy 22-yard line. Walker scored on a 7-yard run and Beckwith's PAT gave Commerce a 13-6 halftime lead.
The second fumble recovery of the game by Hominy linebacker Shawn Dohn allowed the Bucks to take over the ball at the Commerce 11-yard line to start the third quarter.
Owens scored on a 1-yard run and kicked the extra point to give the Bucks a 17-13 margin with 10:44 left in the third quarter.
Commerce senior linebacker Korey Langston intercepted an Owens' pass and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the third quarter. Beckwith's extra point created a 20-17 Tiger lead.
Brock scored on a 44-yard run with 2:11 remaining in the game to seal the Commerce victory. |
